There have been a lot of murmurs thrown around about what is happening at The Mill at Fine Creek and we admit that we are guilty in perpetuating that gossip fodder by posting hints about the inn and tantalizing sneak peaks of the progress over at Fine Creek Brewing Company. The truth is that there are a lot of really exciting things taking place at The Mill – we will call it a “realized dream in-action” – but today, we would like to focus on just one as we collectively navigate through our vision of what things might look like around here next year with our brand new guest cottages!
For twelve years now The Mill has provided an idyllic background for hundreds (and hundreds) of happy couples to exchange their vows and we have always pursued the highest level of service, beauty, and professionalism. From the charisma and charm of the historic ruins to the salon chairs in our bridal suite, we have always sought to create a truly memorable occasion. Likewise, whether our couples seek the inviting lure of Fine Creek’s gentle current or the lushness of our woods and gardens, the backdrop at The Mill has been, and continues to be, stunningly beautiful. However, over the years we have begun to see an unfulfilled need which consequently sparked a desire to be able to offer our couples and their close families a place to stay when they travel to Powhatan. We love being a full-service venue, but sadly, we have had to point our couples as far away as Short Pump or Midlothian for a place to stay, which has always made us feel that we fell a bit short in what we were able to offer. It is to fulfill this need that we are now ecstatic to say that after all the planning and dreaming, in a year from now (fingers-crossed), our inn will be open and available to our couples and their families.
By staying on site in our cottages it is our hope that our guests will have a more complete and relaxing experience from start to finish. The cottages are being built on the property across the street and will be open to the public, with The Mill property remaining private and exclusive to our couples on their wedding day. There will be 13 cottages, totaling 20 bedrooms (7 one-bedroom cottages, 5 two-bedroom cottages, and 1 three-bedroom cottage), two of which will be easily accessible for those guests with extra needs. The cottages will be built in the style of small farmhouses to rival the historicity of The Mill and our beautifully restored General Store. Each cottage will have a front, private sitting room in addition to the bedrooms. Check-in and our complimentary breakfast will take place in the General Store, and because we know that our guests need adequate time to relax and get ready before attending the big event, we will allow for early check-in as well.
These visions and plans are the conclusion to a lot of talking, working, negotiating, and developing… and that was the hardest part. The fun part comes with all the details, those behind-the-scenes preparations, because while the foundations are being poured, Mill owner’s Lisa, Tim and Mark have been carefully and joyfully filling in the necessary accoutrements to each cottage; from buying local artwork (see Ellen Copeland) to selecting furniture and window treatments all the way to which soaps, towels, and bed sheets we would like to offer our guests. Consistent with our overall philosophy, we are choosing quality, comfort, and environmentally-sustainable ways to make our guests as carefree and happy as possible. We love focusing on the smaller details (like the perfect mirror placement) because we find that it is a collection of the petite details that culminate in a truly remarkable outcome.
So now we can all chatter about the exciting things to come, and of course we will continue to update and post pictures of our work-in-progress. We find that there is a constant buzz of anticipation around here, and we hope that you feel it too…and we didn’t even talk about the brewery opening next door!
