6 Hors d’oeuvres Guaranteed To Wow Your Wedding Guests

Think back to the last wedding you attended. Did you have a good time? Were there a lot of people…was the music good…how was the food?

One of the best parts of a wedding is the cocktail hour. It’s the first time all of your guests are together, and sets the tone for the evening combining good music, your favorite drinks, and most of all delicious appetizers.

Many factors will influence the types of food to provide during cocktail hour and when & how they should be delivered. These include the venue, number of guests, your wedding timeline, and guest needs (special diets or allergies).

Here’s a list of our 6 most crowd-pleasing hors d’oeuvres, including some that are passed and others that provide stationary options.

Ham Biscuits

Sweet Potato Ham Biscuits

This southern-inspired appetizer might be simple, but it is widely liked and often has guests scanning the room for the next server. They’re also easy to make and serve, so they are great for large crowds.

At The Mill, we make a delightful twist on a traditionally simple recipe. We make our biscuits from scratch, ensuring the bread is fluffy and delicious. We add sweet potato puree to the biscuit dough for an incredible flavor that works beautifully with the shaved Virginia ham. Our ham biscuits are topped with bourbon honey mustard butter to give the perfect combination of complexity, leaving us with a small bite of big flavor.

If you want versatility from your wedding dishes then fritters are a must! There are many different ingredients that can be used to create fritters for you and your guests. Our most popular fritters are made with queso cotija, roasted poblanos, and corn. Other popular fritter ingredients include:

  • bacon and cheese
  • clam and chive
  • crab and Old Bay

Flat Bread

Another versatile option is flatbreads. They’re typically butlered and can be tailored to work with just about any wedding. Our favorite flatbreads are:

  • white pizza with garlic brushed dough, topped with wilted spinach (we use spinach from our own garden!)
  • smoked salmon with horseradish cream and tobiko roe
  • figs, arugula, and thinly shaved prosciutto

Smoked Salmon Board

For a non-passed option, smoked salmon works wonderfully. We get our salmon from Honey Smoked Fish Co. The salmon is elegantly laid out, and is served with crunchy crostinis, a side of horseradish cream, and garnished with capers and petite diced red onions.

Mini Chicken and Waffles

It’s hard to deny the absolute deliciousness of chicken and waffles…especially when used as a late night snack. These savory snacks are hard to turn away at 10pm after a night of imbibing.

At The Mill, we make mini buttermilk waffles, topped with small golden nuggets of buttermilk fried chicken and a dollop of whipped maple sugar butter. These bite-size waffles are both delicious and adorable!

Soup Shooters with Mini Grilled Cheese

Mini grilled cheeses…need we say more? These are great for fall weddings. They’ll create a wonderfully warm, cozy feel for your guests. The soup can be swapped out for other kinds, such as tomato or mushroom bisque, or anything that goes well with grilled cheese.
